The need for an armed helicopter gunship to protect helicopter gunships had quickly become evident during the first months of the Vietnam War, when helicopters were lost to ground fire. The AH-1, which is fast, heavily armed and highly maneuverable, proved a powerful fighter in the rest of the war. His previous design has led to many other changes (including some with two engines) and a number of other helicopters have been developed by different manufacturers.
